What Is Accommodation?
Accommodation is a core concept in the cognitive development theory of Swiss psychologist Jean Piaget. It refers to the process of modifying existing mental frameworks (schemas) or creating entirely new ones when encountering new information or experiences that cannot be understood through current schemas.
Assimilation and Accommodation
Piaget described two complementary ways we make sense of the world: assimilation and accommodation. While assimilation involves fitting new information into existing schemas, accommodation involves changing the schemas themselves to match new information. For example, a child who calls all four-legged animals “dog” encounters a cat and creates a new category—that is accommodation.
Accommodation in Everyday Life
Accommodation does not only occur in childhood cognitive development. Adults also accommodate when existing beliefs or values no longer match reality—whether through encountering a new culture, meeting someone who defies expectations, or learning through failure.
Accommodation as Growth
Accommodation can feel uncomfortable and disorienting because it requires changing familiar ways of thinking. Yet this discomfort signals growth. The ability to flexibly adjust one’s mental frameworks is central to adaptability and wisdom.
